The 2023 Maui Wildfires
The Maui wildfires were a series of devastating blazes that erupted on August 8, 2023, primarily affecting the western part of the island, including the historic town of Lahaina. Fueled by extreme winds from distant Hurricane Dora (gusts up to 80 mph), dry conditions, and drought, the fires spread rapidly. The main Lahaina fire destroyed over 2,200 structures, razed much of the town to ashes, and caused approximately $5.5–6 billion in damages. It killed 102 people, making it the deadliest U.S. wildfire in over a century. Smaller fires also burned in Upcountry Maui (Kula and Olinda areas). Thousands were displaced, and the disaster impacted cultural sites, homes, businesses, and the environment.
